Americans have many Thanksgiving traditions — turkey, football and traffic-induced headaches — but this year Mother Nature will throw a curve ball into the mix that could make travel plans even more chaotic.
Meteorologists say New Jersey will be drenched with heavy rain tonight through Wednesday. According to AAA, this is traditionally the biggest travel day of the year, with an estimated 42.5 million Americans taking to the roads and skies over this Thanksgiving weekend.
Rain that moved in to the region this morning grew steadier throughout the afternoon, and the National Weather Service says it will pick up overnight, as potential thunderstorms roll in after 1 a.m., dropping a total of 1 to 2 inches on the region.
A flash flood watch has been issued by the National Weather Service for Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Morris, Somerset and Sussex counties, beginning tonight at 10 p.m. and extending through Wednesday afternoon.
The bad weather has been blamed for at least one traffic accident that clogged traffic on Route 78 in Union County during the evening rush hour. The rain and poor visibility has led to delays at Newark Liberty International Airport and Philadelphia International Airport tonight, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
Arrival delays of up to 1 hour and 19 minutes were reported at Newark Liberty, and departure delays of up to 1 hour were reported at Philadelphia International tonight.
