Christmas shoppers will need to get in quick to snap up some consumer technology goods this year, with the Thailand floods continuing to squeeze supplies and push up product prices.

Thailand makes about 40 per cent of the world's hard drives. IDC has estimated about a quarter of the world's hard drive production has been affected by the flooding.

Noel Leeming Group merchandise manager Jason Bell said external hard drives were in "extremely short supply" and the shortage was going to worsen.

Suppliers had increased the prices of some hard drives by more than 50 per cent.

Hewlett-Packard and Sony's Vaio computer division had meanwhile warned of supply issues next month and into January, he said.

Noel Leeming had seen strong demand for Sony's new ebook reader but had been unable to order in more stock.

"I think some of its componentry was made in Thailand so we weren't able to secure any more over and above what we've already been allocated. Based on the run rate we've seen we're likely to sell out before Christmas."

Canon had also indicated it could have supply issues with some of its cameras in late December, but Noel Leeming did not have any more details on which products were affected or the severity of the shortage, Bell said.
